Vision check-up
Today after school I took my two older children to the optometrist. I have been noticing that when my son is reading, he holds the book closer to his face then he should and squints a lot. So, I was worried about his vision. And my daughter hadn't been there since July 2008 so it was time for her to be checked also.
My daughter went in first and she came back out in about 15 minutes and the Dr said her eyes looked very healthy and she is seeing better than 20/20! Then it was time for my son to go in and I wanted to go with to tell the Dr. my concerns and see first hand how he did. The results were not horrible but, he definitely needs glasses. He was really excited to pick out glasses and the ones we decided on he said are really cool!
Then we left and on the way home he says to me, "Mom three kids in my class have glasses." I said yes. Then he says, "some people make fun of them." I asked, "do you do that?" "No," he replied. Then he said, "but they call the kids with glasses some mean names." I said, "are you worried that they will call you names?" He said, "Yes." At this point I wanted to cry for him but I knew that was not what he needed, so I continued the conversation. I said, "you know when people call you names you just need to ignore them." He said, "I know but they won't stop."
So, we really had a long talk about this subject. And I hope that when he gets his glasses next week no one ruins his excitement about them and about being able to read better.

Apples, Apples and more Apples
What do you say when someone asks you if you want some apples?
Of course, you say yes! And then they ask how many you will take?
And if you are me you say, A whole bucket full! Here is the bucket of apples that I came home to yesterday.
So, I spent most of my morning today canning apples. Thank goodness I have a Pampered Chef apple peeler, corer, and slicer. That helped alot. I canned sliced apples in very light syrup. Here are the instructions and recipe I followed. This way no matter what I want apples for: pie, crisp or sauce all I have to do is pull a jar off the shelf. And my end result was 10 jars of as many apple slices as I could squish in each one.

Homemade Granola Bars
These are always a hit at my house and my sister just asked for the recipe, so I thought I would post it on here.
Ingredients:
2 cups oats
3/4 cup wheat germ
1 c peanuts, crushed
3/4 cup sunflower kernals
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
4 T butter
2 t vanilla extract
8 oz dried fruit (or choc chips or pb chips)
Put oats, germ, peanuts, kernals in baking pan and toast in oven at 400' for 10-12 minutes, stirring very frequently.
Put sugar, honey, butter, and vanilla in saucepan and bring to a simmer.
Then mix both mixtures and the fruit together well.
Line a 9X13 dish with waxed paper and pour mixture in evenly. Put another sheet of waxed paper across the top and take another 9X13 pan and push down evenly but hard on your granola mixture. Then let it sit for 30 minutes to set.
Then take it and carefully transfer to a cutting board and cut into the size of bars you want.
Make sure to keep these in an air-tight container. I usually leave half out and put half in the fridge until the first half is eaten. Since they do not contain preservatives they will stay good forever!

I just made my first purchase from Alice & you can get a $10 referral credit
I talked about Alice about two months ago here.
I really like the idea of this site because they have coupons they apply to certain items and shipping is Free. I can usually buy things for a really great price at stores when I combine coupons with sales so I have a price point for everything I buy. The first time I looked around I did not find anything at my price points, however, tonight when I was looking around a did find a few things and placed my order. I ordered five items for $8.81 but after coupons my total came to $7.01 and remember Free shipping.
I was really delighted to find out that anyone that registers at Alice.com using my referral link will get a $10 credit to their account after they spend $50. That's a pretty darn good deal. Check it out now:

Rain, Rain, Go Away!
Ugh, It has been raining almost all day. We are at 2" right now and it is still raining. With a high today of 55 and no sun, it was a really dreary day. And tomorrow's forecast is rain and 53.
So, it is definitely soup weather. I made cheddar potato soup and homemade biscuits for supper. It was a super big hit with everyone, I only have one bowl left, and I thought I made enough for two meals! I guess I will be making soup again real soon.
